With this painting, I wanted to capture something strange about closeness. We can be physically very close to someone, touch each other, share the same space, and still feel a certain distance between us. That is why the bodies in the painting are so close to one another, while at the same time I feel that each figure remains slightly in their own world.
For me, this painting is not really about loneliness, but it is not simply about intimacy either. It is more about that uncertain space somewhere between the two. About how we can be very close to someone and still never fully reach them or truly understand them.
Perhaps it is exactly when we get closest to one another that we become most aware of the distance that still remains between us.

This is not progress - it is a slow demise, dressed in national colors.
